NMN vs NR: what the research actually says
A practical breakdown of two popular NAD+ precursors — dosing, forms, and who each may suit.
NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) and NR (nicotinamide riboside) are both precursors that the body can use to make NAD+, a coenzyme involved in cellular energy metabolism. Marketing often treats them as interchangeable — they are not.
NR has a longer published human-trial history for raising blood NAD+ levels at common supplemental doses. NMN has grown quickly in consumer interest and continues to accumulate clinical data, but study designs, doses, and endpoints vary widely.
When comparing products, look past the ingredient name. Check the form (and any salts or complexes), the milligram dose relative to studied ranges, and whether the brand publishes third-party testing. “More milligrams” is not automatically better if absorption and stability are unclear.
A practical takeaway: choose the precursor that fits your goals and budget, then prioritize transparency and testing over trend cycles. If you take other NAD+-pathway supplements, avoid stacking overlapping actives without a clear reason.
